Sailfish Season in Mozambique in September

Etienne Admin |09 Jun, 2018 | 1 Comments | Return|

The late winter and spring months in Mozambique is the time for sailfish hunting. September is prime time to target these speedsters around Silver Fish Lodge, Inhambane, Mozambique.

We target them with a spread which includes teasers and a series of small islanders with a strip bait, or a halfbeak rigged behind the Kona. We pull the bait fast, at 7 knots. We release all our fish, and lately don’t manhandle the fish into the boat, as I am convinced that too much damage occurs in the handling, and subsequent stress of being out of the water after a rigorous fight. What’s the use of releasing a fish that will die? We grab the bill and you can always get a good photo in. It’s not necessary to do it any other way.

There will also be Yellowfin Tuna around- in fact, the annual fishing competition held out of Guinjata just down the road which ended yesterday, yielded a huge 71 kg fish caught in the deep on a Kona. People have been catching these huge fish off Richards bay, and Sodwana in the channel, so they are here- we just must go and find them…. I will happily take you.

Around this time of year with the change in the season are also Wahoo that are still around.

For returning guests, I’m offering a 15% discount in September. Limited space, talk to me soon.

Reel Screamer, Raptor and Bounty are ready to fish, whilst Rocknrolla is having open heart surgery. We are re-building the two x 200 hp Four stroke Yamahas. And yes, it does hurt, a lot! She should be ready to fish in October.

October and November, we will be fishing the Marlin Season out of Bazaruto Island on FV Bounty, and in between doing a spearfishing trip to Lazarus Banks, Off Pemba between the 14th and 19th November. There’s a big Doggie (Dogtooth Tuna) that has Darryl and Eugene’s name on it and they are determined to get him this time.

We offer sleeping on the Bounty where we anchor between the two islands of Bengerra and Bazaruto at night, so we are close to the fishing grounds. Still have some weeks available, but it’s going fast. Vilanculos fly-in and I meet and greet at the airport.

Next time you guys come there will be some changes at Silver Fish Lodge. We are upgrading……more of that to follow. The ambiance and vibe will stay the same as long as I’m alive, but it was time to refurbish and update to keep in the game. I was outvoted against buying more fishing stuff. It’s all good guys- I’m excited!

Never be so busy making a living that you forget to live your life. Talk to me and see you on the water sometime.
