Marlin Fishing Charters Bazaruto Island

Etienne Admin |19 Sep, 2017 | 0 Comments | Return|

Those of you that know anything about Mozambique Bill fishing will know that between October and November the place to be fishing is out of Vilanculos, fishing the north and east side of Bazaruto island.

This is the time of the year to target Black and Blue and Striped marlin. The all Africa record Black Marlin comes from here (1298 pounds, November 1998,  Johnny Harelson) What makes this place special is the deep water that comes so close to the shore line on the east side of the island. Each year there are a few #1000 pound plus fish that get caught and released from this hotspot. Bazaruto itself is the playground of the rich, with accommodation being very expensive, but ultra-luxurious.

It’s easy to get to, as SAAairlink and LAM airlines offer direct flights into Vilanculos from Johannesburg International airport, and from Maputo International airport.

FV Bounty recently underwent a major refit, and is now ready for charters off Vilanculos/ Bazaruto from October 1st, 2017 (Sunday), until the 25th November 2017. Typically, we are looking for 1-week charters, that run from Sunday to Saturday, with 5 days fishing in between. I collect from the airport and drop off at your hotel. There are plenty of places to stay in Vilanculos, but we prefer Dona Ana, or Casa Cabana- both websites are linked to my webpages…… We have a good working relationship with these hotels and know the owners and managers personally.

This year’s charter rates are zar 8000 (us$600) per day for the boat, plus fuel (between 200 and 300l per day, depending where we go) Fuel currently is costing about 65 mets per litre ($1, 10) or about zar 15 per litre.

We are licensed for groups of 6, plus 2 crew.

A typical day will be pickup in Vilanculos at 7am, and then fish until 16h00. Lunch and drinks are served on board, and we have a fighting chair and harness, good outriggers, and a lounge area inside the cabin, with place to lie down in the cabin, if needed. Our flybridge area can handle 6 comfortably. We also have the latest Furuno Electronics, with all the safety gear, inspected, maintained, and certified.

We have 2 by Penn international 80# rods and reels, and 4 by Shimano 80# rods and reels, with bent butts for the fighting chair. We also have 6 by 50# shimano rods and reels, for lighter tackle enthusiasts. We mostly fish konas, which ensure less damage to the fish. All our billfish are released.
